Spoon drill bits are used to drill deep holes in the centre line of the workpiece. The Hamlet HCT160 “long hole boring tool” (spoon drill bit) is made in HSS, with a total length of approximately 860 mm. A spiral has been milled in the front part in order to facilitate removal of the chips. The RR305 spoon drill bit is the traditional model without spiral and with a front widia plate; the total length is 850 mm. The drill is pushed into the rotating wood via the drilled through tailstock and via a drilled through centre point rotating at the same time. The thickness of the drill should obviously correspond to the diameter of the bore in the tailstock. In most cases this is 8 mm. Because the drill should not be allowed to become too hot, it is important not to let the lathe rotate too fast, and to very frequently remove the wood shavings from the hole.
